Numbers 4:29-33: a reflection

29“As for the sons of Merari, you shall count them by their families, by their fathers’ houses; 30you shall count them from thirty years old and upward even to fifty years old—everyone who enters on the service, to do the work of the Tent of Meeting. 31This is the duty of their burden, according to all their service in the Tent of Meeting: the tabernacle’s boards, its bars, its pillars, its sockets, 32the pillars of the court around it, their sockets, their pins, their cords, with all their instruments, and with all their service. You shall appoint the instruments of the duty of their burden to them by name. 33This is the service of the families of the sons of Merari, according to all their service in the Tent of Meeting, under the hand of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest.”

This is a job assignment, and not a glamorous one. The sons of Merari are given the tabernacle's hardware to carry: the boards, the bars, the pillars, the sockets, the pins, the cords. Not the ark, not the golden things, those went to others. Merari got the heavy frames and the tent-pegs, the load-bearing lumber of the house of God.

But notice how this humble work is treated. It is counted as service in the Tent of Meeting, holy work, and each man's burden is assigned to him by name. God does not lump them together as anonymous laborers; he appoints the instruments of their duty to them by name. The one who carries the pegs is known, named, given his particular load on purpose.

And consider: without the boards and bars and sockets and pins, the whole tent falls down. The glorious things inside need the plain frame to hold them up. If your work is the unseen, unglamorous kind, the carrying and the fixing and the holding-up that no one notices, this quiet passage is for you. God calls that service holy, assigns it by name, and knows exactly who is carrying the load. Do your ordinary, heavy work today as the sacred thing God counts it to be.

Lord, you call humble, heavy work holy and know each worker by name. Help me carry my unseen load faithfully, as service to you who sees and names me.
